ORIGIN OF RIRD
Regional Institute of Rural Development, Bhavanisagar is a Training institute under the control of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Department situated in Erode District. As Rural Extension Training Centre from 1959 presently the nomenclature of the Institute is called as Regional Institute of Rural Development.
OBJECTIVE
With a view to impart training and equip the gross root level extension workers (Gramasevaks) the state Institute of Community Development was started at Bhavanisagar in the Composite Coimbatore District in the year 1954.
During the recruitment of Youth Service Corps in Rural Development, the State Institute of Rural Development, Bhavanisagar managed the training programmes of both RETC and YSC Scheme. Thus the RETC was functioning as a wing of SIRD from 01.06.1972.
Orientation training Programmes were Organised at SIRD for various Department staff in the Cadre of Assistant Directors and also IAS probationers course. Consequent on the shifting of the SIRD to Chennai, the RETC is functioning independently from 08.05.1986.
From the year 1963, training for Rural Artisans in Carpentary and Blacksmithy was imparted at the workshop wing. From the year 1979, training on TRYSEM scheme was also imparted upto 1999 March. The above training programmes were now dropped due to introduction of alternative schemes by GOI.
At present training programmes are imparted to Rural Development personnel and PRI functionaries.
